Subject:
LIMITATIONS
OF LANTASTIC 8.01 UNDER WINDOWS XP.
The
following limitations apply to LANtastic 8.01
under Windows XP:
1.
Windows XP 64-bit versions will not work with
LANtastic network drivers.
Solution:
Use
only 32-bit versions of Windows XP for PC's
that require access to the LANtastic network.
PC's with the both the Microsoft Network Client
and the LANtastic Network Client installed
on the Local Area Connection can access shared
resouces on both networks (including access
to PC's running Windows XP 64-bit).
2.
The Windows XP PC can not be configured as
a LANtastic print server.
Solution:
Use an older version of Windows (or DOS) for
any needed print servers.
3.
When installing LANtastic on a Windows XP
PC which has Service Pack 2 or later installed,
under some (very rare) conditions LANtastic
may fail to accept the serial number.
Solution:
See TN5536
for a detailed solution.
4.
When installing LANtastic on a Windows XP
PC which has Service Pack 2 or later installed,
the Windows Firewall may block network traffic
needed by LANtastic.
Solution:
From the Windows XP Control Panel, open the
Windows Firewall applet and disable the firewall.
Another solution is to leave the firewall
enabled, and create the following exceptions:
UDP Port 135
TCP Port 135
TCP Port 137
UDP Port 138
Note: If you are running any third party firewall
software such as a Security Suite version
of an Anti-Virus program this software may
require the above exceptions as well.
5.
The chat feature in LANtastic 8.01 for Windows
is not compatible with LANtastic 8.0 for DOS.
Solution:
A third Party NETBIOS Chat program can be
used instead.
6.
Under some conditions transfering data over
the LANtastic network from a Windows XP PC
may be slower then normal, yet transfering
data to the Windows XP PC over the LANtastic
network is fast.
Solution:
From the Windows XP Control Panel, open the
Network Connections applet and view the status
of your LAN connection. Click the "Properties"
button, and select the "Internet Protocol
TCP/IP properties", then click the "Advanced"
button, and click the "WINS" tab.
From the WINS tab, and select "Enable
NETBIOS over TCP/IP". Click on "OK"
twice to save the changes, and reboot Windows
XP.
Note: When this setting is enabled, you may
need to assign a static IP address to this
PC, as a DHCP server may not be able to dynamically
assign an IP address to it.
These limitations also apply to running newer
versions of Windows under XP Mode.
