Before installing NetModem on Windows NT 4.0, be sure
you have pre-installed the required components:
NetModem Client Requirements under Windows NT 4.0
NetModem Server Requirements under Windows NT 4.0:
-
NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a.
-
Active Desktop Shell (Available in IE 4.01 - Windows
Desktop Update)
-
Active Directory Extention for NT 4.0
In
order to use the logging to database feature, these
components can be installed later:
-
MDAC (MS Data Access Components) 2.8 Service Pack

-
Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8
NT
4.0 Service Pack 6a can be downloaded from Microsoft's
web site here:

IE
4.01 (SP1 or SP2) is no longer available from Microsoft's
web site.
It can still be found on third party sites such as the
Evolt Browser Archive here:
https://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/win32/4.01-sp2
Install
IE 4.01 (SP1 or SP2) and click yes when
when you are prompted to install the Windows Desktop
Update, which includes Active Desktop. Otherwise
NT 4.0 will be missing the Active Desktop Shell which
is required by NetModem Server.
After installing IE 4.01 with Active Desktop, we suggest
upgrading to IE 6.0-SP1 to upgrade and secure many
of the Windows shell components. IE 6.0-SP1 can be downloaded
from Microsoft's web site here:

Frequently
Asked Questions on Installing NetModem under Windows
NT 4.0:
Q.:
Why does NetModem Server require Active Desktop and
Active Directory under NT 4.0?
A.: Although NetModem Server was originally designed
for the NT 4.0 platform, it has evolved over the years
to require several additional components. While NetModem
Server does not use Active Desktop itself, it requires
newer Shell32.DLL library functions that are only available
in NT 4.0 if Active Desktop has been installed. Active
Directory support is required for user authentication.
Q:. Our NT 4.0 PC already has a newer version of
IE installed, but IE4.01 was never installed first so
it does not include Active Desktop. How can I install
Active Desktop?
A:
We recommend first uninstalling the newer IE, then
install IE4.01 with Windows Desktop Update, and then reinstall
the newer IE.
Another option is to use IE6Setup.exe (which is included
with Internet Explorer 6 installation source files). While
you are connected to the Internet open a Command Prompt,
change to the directory where the IE6 installation source
files are located, and enter the following command line:
IE6Setup.exe /C:"ie6wzd /e:IE4Shell_NTx86 /I:Y"
A third alternative is to use the IE
Admin Kit (IEAK) to create a customized Internet
Explorer 6 installation package to install the Windows
Desktop Update on NT 4.0.
Q:.
Are these components also required in newer versions
of Windows?
A: The required componets are pre-installed in Windows
2000 and all later versions of Windows.
Q.: What development environment is NetModem created
with, and how long will NT 4.0 continue to be a supported
platform?
A:
NT 4.0 support in NetModem will be discontinued in 2014.
NetModem was originally developed in Visual Studio 6.0,
using Visual C++. In 2007 the development environment
was upgraded to Visual Studio 2005-SP1, which has allowed
maintaining backwards compatibility with NT 4.0 while
also allowing support for both both 32-bit and 64-bit
versions.
Q.: What other NT 4.0 security updates should
be made after installing the requirements?
A.: Microsoft released a post-NT 4.0-SP6a Security
Rollup Package (SRP) in 2001 which is highly recommended.
It can be downloaded from Microsoft's web site here:
https://support.microsoft.com/?id=299444
