Installing NetModem Client on Multi-user Operating Systems
This procedure applies to NetModem Client only when
used with Microsoft Terminal Services or the Citrix
MetaFrame operating system.
A NetModem Client virtual COM port, like any physical
COM port, can only be used by one application at any
given time. When using NetModem Client on a multiuser
operating system, you should use the following steps
to ensure that each user uses seperate NetModem Client
COM ports and modem device drivers:
- Run the NetModem Client setup program as described
in the Users
- When the Select Ports Window appears, first set
up a single COM port, and configure the IP Address
of the NetModem Server and any other desired settings.
When you click the "Save" button, these
settings will be remembered for future COM ports
- After you click "Save", NetModem Client
will prompt you to add a modem driver. For now,
click "Continue" to skip this step.
- Click the "Select Ports" button, and
choose the maximum number of NetModem Client virtual
COM ports that your users will need. For example
if you have 50 users and each user uses a single
modem, then select a total of 50 virtual COM ports.
When you click OK, you will see that these have
all been configured with the same IP address and
settings that the first COM port was given.
- Click the "Save" button, and again it
will prompt you to add a modem driver. This time,
click the "Add Modem Driver" button, and
follow the steps shown to add modems using the Window
Add Hardware Wizard. When you are instructed to
assign a modem driver to the ports, select all the
NetModem Client virtual COM ports. This will
allow all the selected COM ports to be assigned
to the same modem driver at one time.
- In the NetModem Client Configuration, click the
"Advanced" button, and disable the checkbox
which says "Show Message if Port is not available".
These messages should be disabled because otherwise
they will be seen by every thin-client that is connected
to the terminal server.
- If needed, install modem drivers on each Virtual COM port.
- Instruct each user to only use the NetModem Client
COM ports assigned to them, or the corrosponding modem
device generated by the modem driver. NetModem Server will
automatically connect each user to the next available
physical modem on the modem server. If all the modems
are currently in
use, the user will see an error message from their
PC application which is attempting to access the
